linuxfonts.narod.ru -> AptoSID 2013-01 Ἑσπερίδες Wi-Fi Ready Internet Multimedia Respin (previously known as Sidux)

AptoSID is a desktop-oriented Linux LiveCD (bootable from CD/DVD/USB) operating system based on the "unstable" branch of Debian, which uses the codename Sid. The distribution consists of a Live CD (bootable CD-ROM) for IA-32 or x86-64 architecture and can be installed to a hard drive through a graphical installer.

Since AptoSID originates in Germany, its developers cannot include some very useful network utilities like tcpdump or even telnet (sic!). Also adhering to the "all" free status of Debian distribution, they don't include any firmware, thus you cannot use AptoSID with your laptop which only has WiFi network connection.

Here you can download a custom AptoSID respin which allows using the network without any hassle. Download the image here: aptosid-2013-01-hesperides-xfce-i386-201305050307.enhanced.iso (Mirrors: free.fr, sendmyway.com, rusfolder.com, (more required!))

The next release will contain the following applications: none at the moment (please, send your proposals to my e-mail (google for it) or add them below in the comments block).

Warning: the support for all languages other than English, German and Russian has been removed to reduce the image size.

2011.02.07 update: from now on this Aptosid respin is compressed using XZ, thus with all the additions it weighs 15% less than the original.

2013.05.24 update: ooops, I've forgotten to append the information about my modifications to the original image. You can fetch it here.

AptoSID is dead. Their forum is dead. It hasn't seen new releases for almost two years already, "Install it and use it as a Debian distro", no thanks, I need a LiveCD distro with fresh software.

If you want to thank the author or if you want this respin to be updated, please, consider the ad at the top of the page. Thank you!

Some notable extras:

  • Most commonly used firmware for WiFi adapters.
  • A lot of useful network utilities as AptoSID doesn't even include telnet (ngrep, netcat, telnet, rdesktop, etc.).
  • Core Web Fonts™.
  • Some hardware related utilities (smartctl, hdparm, lshw, etc.).
  • Hardware stress test utilities (memtester, cpuburn, etc.).
  • Some utilities to cope with the Windows world (offline registry editor, Rar/unrar, 7-zip archiver).
  • NetworkManager and cell providers database.
  • Universal console audio player (moc).
  • Text mode Internet browser (links).
  • Includes Qt4 libraries (for easy installation of VirtualBox) and a simplistic Aurora web browser.
  • Skype 2.2 (I refuse to use 4.x).
  • Ayttm universal messenger (supports Yahoo!, MSN, Jabber, ICQ, IRC, file transfers).
  • Fully Internet ready.
  • Can play almost all video and audio files formats (moc/ffplay).

Here's a list of added .deb packages (not listing lib* and qt4 libraries but they are included):
